1920s Life in Paris

Life-Parisienne6.jpg

This is a magazine cover that made me melt. After that, it made me ask - Is this what life was like in Paris in the '20s?  Cupid would shoot an arrow into the nipple of the breast of your lover?  Life must have been wild in Paris.I could never have imagined this picture, and wouldn't have had the nerve to make it public if I did.  But there it was, the cover image on an issue of Parisian Life, displayed on the newstand as everyone walked by, and ...  this illustration was OK? Wow.  What a culture!I love it when I encounter a picture that uses a stereotype - in this case Cupid shooting his arrow - in a totally new and mindblowing way.  I think that if this illustration was inside the magazine my reaction would have been more muted.  It is the right-out-there power of a popular magazine's cover image that gives it the picture its loud pop. The pastel colors add to the romantic Valentine feel, but I think Cupid was supposed to be at work full-time in Paris, not just in February. This is one of those pictures that really gets me.  I don't believe I can ever think of Cupid and his prey again without recalling this image.
