The Fickle Finger of Fame for Ed Andrews

Ed Andrews was an outfielder for the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1880s.  Ed’s career was perfectly placed to insure that he would be remembered for a century to come.  It was not Ed’s baseball prowess that has earned him this memory, but it is the baseball cards issued during the economic boom-time when Ed played that kept him in mind.  His excellent season of 1887 is what really did it for him.  He was included in many cigarette card sets issued at this time – Old Judge, Gypsy Queen, Buckner’s Gold Coin and Kalamazoo Bats. He played out his career in a few more lackluster seasons.  It was just a question of timing.Ever heard of Ed Andrews before?  Didn’t think so.
