Warriors in Afghanistan

Warriors in Afghanistan. My initial thought when I first inspected this 1860s carte-de-visite was – how similar it would be to a current photograph of tribal Afghanis?  Instead of swords and daggers would there be AK47’s?  They certainly would not be in a photographer’s studio. Instead of heavy furs there would be more modern clothing. There are families here.  Small boys are being raised in the tradition, young warriors to grow up and take over the defense of the family.  And, so it is today in Afghanistan.  Before, during and after our hubristic leaders see their plans turn to dust, disintegrating into the Afghani soil, the families, the tribes of  Afghanistan go on as they did in the 1860s.
