A Fish Font for an Advertising Trade Card

Fish-Font.jpg

It's a fish font for this wonderful trade card printed by Stahl and Jaeger!  You get eels, trout, cod, halibut, clams, and fishing rods.  All this with a detailed description of what Mssrs. Louis Knoll and S. Prichard have in store at the Knoll & Pritchard Sea Food Market in New York City in 1885 - all from the sea and a fisherman's delight. The business duo list themselves in the "Washington Market". This expansive commercial locale was bounded by Washington and West Streets on the west and east, and by Vesey and Fulton Streets on the north and south.  There was another venue - the West Washington Market, which was located on the dock in the pier district just to the west.  The Washington Market occupied an entire city block so it must have been a happening place.  I'll bet that's how these fishmongers could afford to produce such a beautiful card! Now when visiting  NYC you have Chelsea Market or Farmers' Markets on Saturday mornings, but I am sure it is a far cry from the 19th century market experience advertised here.Looking for the perfect picture for your next project?
