Advertising Angels' Gifts of Tobacco

Angels-of-Tobacco6.jpg

Despite continuing research, I cannot discover the origin of the legend telling of angelic spirits bringing tobacco to humans. It was part of the lore when tobacco-related imagery began to appear in the mid-19th Century, but it surely existed long before. There are many tribal myths with variations on the theme - discoveries in a dream, presentations from a cloud, and many more faith-based renditions.  But the earliest version I have seen is this 1840s black on white cigar box from la Habana, showing angels pouring down tobacco from boxes onto happily smoking Spanish aristocracy of Cuba. There is a classical feel to this, but the legendary reference is clear.I show here another, later example, with the myth expressed in a full three-dimensional setting, in color, and with the fulness of drama.
