Earl Averill, Cleveland Indians Catcher, In Flight

21.-Averill-Leaps-For-Home1.jpg

Earl Averill, Cleveland Indians catcher, flies through the air to score a run in cavernous League Park in a game against the Boston Red Sox.  It is unclear which Red Sox catcher, there were so many in the 1930s, is obscured beneath the dust, but we do know that Leslie Jones of Boston took the photograph. What I really like about this picture are the photographers in the background, right, running with their heavy 4x5 view cameras.  Could they capture anything more than a blur?  The best they could have gotten was a photo of Averill's backside, while our Leslie Jones got himself one beautifully composed image.
