The Mets in the Subway - The Rucker Archive

The Mets in the subway! Back when I lived in upstate New York, Saratoga Springs to be specific, I visited the City on a regular basis. An American League fan from birth, I could not stand the Yankees and their dominance.  But Lindsey Nelson on the radio soon convinced me that the Mets were my team.  I came to love the nutso Mets, their unusual characters, their regular participation in outrageous games and baseball situations. I jumped on board in the mid-1970s, and followed the team into the '80s, when things really got interesting. Instead of having one lucky year from out of nowhere, like in '69 or '73, the Mets of 1980s were consistently good, and getting better. When Gary Carter came in from Montreal, Doc Gooden blossomed, Keith Hernandez was acquired from the Cardinals, and Darryl Strawberry moved into the outfield, the team became a big winner.TheMetsinSubwayStrawberryAs their rise continued in 1984 the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York City mounted a series of posters advertising the Mets and the quick trip available to the ballpark. I saw posters of Hernandez and Strawberry, but there may have been more of them. I doubt that many people got to see them, so here they are, as preserved.AND - one last shout out to the 1986 Mets fans still around - WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! You can't forget that!
