Trojan Horse - A Citrus Label
It is amazing the lengths advertisers can go to in creating an eye-catching image to sell their product. It was probably not necessary to go to these artistic lengths to grab someone's attention. I think the credit goes to the artist, not the fruit producer who hired him, in the making of this Sunkist orange label from about 1920.I do not think the lithographic artistry exhibited in this label was necessary to sell the product, but the artist was given an assignment, and went all out to produce a fascinating image. And the image is compelling not just because of the art, but also because the story of the Trojan Horse is known worldwide. It is an historical legend, that some think is a true story, while others believe it is a fantastic tale, which became believed through the re-telling.So, give a cheer for the lithographic stone workers at Schmidt Litho Company of San Francisco, who went above and beyond their job assignment to entertain our vision today.Visit The Rucker Archive home page and search our 20 categories with thousands of wild and wonderful images of the 19th and 20th Centuries.
