Umpire Emmett Ashford Ruling - Do you think the runner is safe?

Is that what umpire Emmett Ashford is indicating in this thrilling action photo?  The caption on the reverse of this Dominican winter league shot confirms our opinion.  Felipe Alou of the Lions has just slid under the tag of the catcher for the opposing Tigers, inspiring Ashford's dramatic gesture.  Winter League action shots from this late 1950s to early 1960s era are not easy to find, and if you get some names that are recognizable, all the better.  No one deserves fame more than Ashford, who is perhaps the best known of all black umpires in the 20th Century.
